Cooper's Paddock Projects
A word about the protection of the urban environment from the Wildlife Preservation Society of Australia.
Protecting habitat for wildlife is core business for the Society
When the Wildlife Preservation Society of Australia was formed in 1909 its members were fully committed to the conservation of Australian native flora and fauna in all its forms and the vital natural habitat for the birds and animals' long term survival.
It is just as important to preserve urban wildlife habitat as it is to preserve the more isolated habitat of Australia's fauna and flora. Our Society has fought many battles to preserve urban habitat, perhaps the most famous being the Battle for Kelly's Bush.
When the Society's directors were invited to visit the area of bushland on the George's River near Warwick Farm in Sydney they were very impressed with the large mature trees, lush green understorey and vegetation in the area known locally as Cooper's Paddock.
With the encouragement and support of a large number of local residents, the directors voted to assist in preserving this area for wildlife conservation and native habitat and to assist in the conservation of the native birds and animals which call this area home.
In the Cooper's Paddock area there is a unique collection of mature trees providing a natural home for endangered species such as the powerful owl and many other small bushland birds and animals, which can only survive in old growth forests like those at Cooper's Paddock on the Georges River.
We are greatly encouraged by the hard work and commitment of the local community in striving to protect and preserve this vital wildlife conservation habitat for the next generation of young Australians.
We wish them well in their endeavours to assist in preserving all of our native wildlife. MORE
